What is Your Goal
Martial Arts can be divided into four (4) categories. The best fit for you depends on your goals and expectations.
The Four Categories: Art, Combatives, Self Defense, Sport
All Four Categories will improve your health. Any regular activity has positive health benefits. Given that, let us focus on the differences in these Martial related categories.
ART: An in depth study of a specific Martial Style. This often includes earning a rank through the demonstration of cooperative skills, such as Kata, Forms, etc.. It may include the study of ancient weapons. One should not assume the study of an Art means you are ready for a street fight. All to often, some Martial Arts instruction does not delve into application nor prepare the practitioner for meeting resistance. That said, most Self Defense techniques are derived from one or more Arts. Whether or not the study of an Art prepares you for Self Defense depends on the Instruction.
COMBATIVES: This is the new buzz word. Combatives refers to Combat principles. Do not confuse this with Self Defense. Combatives is a "take no prisoners" premeditated aggressive approach. If this is your goal, join the military. That may sound flippant, but that is the reality of it. If you want to learn how to aggressively assault, the military is where you want to be.
SELF DEFENSE: There are isolated Self Defense courses. These are not concerned with the lengthy process involved with an ART, or the premeditated aggressiveness of COMBAT, or the tricks of SPORT. Such courses are often short - a few weeks to several months. They can be very intense as they are designed to bring to the practitioner the feeling of being attacked. Self Defense is mostly about how to avoid or evade situations. Rarely do Self Defense classes examine the idea of protecting others, such as family members. The short length of such courses will make you aware of what you should know or understand. However, the lack of long term training reduces its effectiveness over time.
SPORT: BJJ, TKD, MMA, Boxing, Fencing - these are all examples of some martial concepts that have been modified for sport. Sport is a good thing. Many people enjoy friendly competition. Sport training is distinct from the other categories. It is more cooperative than Combatives. By virtue of improving your conditioning, it may provide some advantages in Self Defense, but the techniques learned are not always advantageous. For example, MMA fighters train to fight, to engage, while good Self Defense may mean running from a bad situation. Sport often lacks the details of an Art.
WHAT WE DO
We do ART and SELF DEFENSE. There are a lot of useful Arts and Art Techniques that work well in Self Defense. Most Self Defense courses draw their techniques from one or more Arts. We use the Art of Wing Chun to develop the necessary structure, often breaking away from the traditional to delve into practical uses and realistic scenarios. A practical Art like Wing Chun blends well with Self Defense, while providing a more detailed structure.
We also do basic Kicboxing: A little bit JKD, and a little bit Muay Thai, it is a whole lotta workout. Get your punch and kick on!
